Southwestern College’s Accreditation Reaffirmed by ACCJC

Southwestern College received full reaffirmation of its accreditation status Friday by the commission that accredits all California community colleges. The college received word of its updated status Friday, following the submission to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of reports and evidence showing continuous improvement in several key areas at Southwestern.

Southwestern College Lifts Lockdown; Chula Vista Police Have Suspect in Custody

Southwestern College’s Chula Vista campus was in lockdown for approximately one hour this afternoon as a safety precaution because of an armed suspect in the area.

Former gang member graduates Southwestern College with full-ride scholarship to UC San Diego

Steve Whiting has left a life of gang activity and jail behind and will graduate Southwestern College on Friday, May 26. He transfer to U.C. San Diego with a full-ride scholarship.
From age 15 to 20, Whiting spent many years in and out of prison and jail. He did half a year in juvenile hall, half a year in county, a year in the penitentiary, and so on and so forth. He served time for a slew of different charges from assault, to robbery, to gang activity.

Record Number of Graduates Walk at Southwestern College Commencement

Southwestern College celebrates its 56th Commencement Ceremony Friday at DeVore Stadium. On the field among the 800 graduates will be four sibling duos, two couples, a senior citizen, 18 veterans and two mother-daughter duos. Celebrating with the graduates will be three community members being granted Honorary Degrees—Ron and Reina Bolles for their contributions to the fine arts in South County and Christine Moore for her contributions to the economic development and civic and social services of South County.

Attempted Abduction at Southwestern College’s Chula Vista Campus

Southwestern College Campus Police have been investigating an attempted abduction of a 16-year-old student on the Chula Vista campus today. At approximately 9:15 a.m., the student had been walking across the campus near the H Street entrance and was confronted by the suspect. He offered her $200 to get into his vehicle. She refused and walked away. The suspect then cut her off, got out of his vehicle and grabbed her. She was able to break free.
