When Architecture Professor Diana de la Torre Arredondo was in the fourth grade, the recession hit her family so hard they had to move from San Diego to Tijuana where it was more affordable to live. Her father, who worked as a draftsman and in construction for most of her life, bought a small empty lot and designed and built their home across the border.

Southwestern College has received AA ratings for the first sale of $140 million of its Proposition Z bonds. The ratings from Moody’s Investors Service and Standard and Poor’s highlight the strength of the local market, the diversity of Southwestern College’s taxpayers and faith in the district and its taxpayers to repay the bonds.

Governor Brown Signs Bill for Free Community College Tuition

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed legislation that provides one year of free tuition at any California Community College for any first-time student who enrolls full-time. On Friday, Brown signed Assembly Bill 19 that waives the first year of fees, regardless of household income. At $46 per unit, the California Community College system is the most economical higher education opportunity in the country, as well as the largest institution of higher education in the country.

Southwestern College students now have clearer access to six top California law schools with the new Pathway to Law School initiative, sponsored by the California State Bar's Council on Access and Fairness.  The program is open to all majors who are interested or would like to know more about becoming a lawyer or pursuing a career in law.
