In the spirit of Second Chance Month, the story of Professor Dr. Llewelyn Labio’s (EdD) transformative journey at Southwestern College (SWC) resonates deeply, embodying the resilience, courage, and determination emblematic of both occasions.
“My journey at SWC began with pushing a stroller with my son, Nico in it,” reminisces Dr. Labio, reflecting on the pivotal moment when she decided to enroll in classes at SWC. “He was barely 3 months old when I walked into the Cesar Chavez building to enroll and register for classes. I had no idea what I was doing. I just knew I needed a different path than the one I had been on.”
As a woman navigating the complexities of education while raising a child and grappling with the repercussions of past incarceration, the challenges seemed insurmountable. Yet, amidst the uncertainty, there were beacons of support that illuminated the way forward. Dr. Labio recalls the profound impact of Communications Professor Candice Tafolla-Schreiber and Counselor Ed Cosio, whose unwavering encouragement and support left indelible imprints on her journey.
“I had wonderful teachers who were dynamic,” Dr. Labio attested. “They left imprints on me that encouraged me to keep going and pursue a higher education despite the challenges.”
The support system at SWC, particularly through programs like EOPS (Extended Opportunities Programs and Services), played a pivotal role in easing the transition back into academia, underscoring the importance of second chances and support networks for individuals seeking to rebuild their lives.
“I always felt a sense of belonging at SWC,” Dr. Labio reflected. “The students, faculty, administrators, and staff have always been more welcoming than any other institution I have attended or taught at.”
However, it wasn’t just the academic support that made SWC stand out; it was the sense of community that fostered lasting connections and friendships. “Finding community,” Dr. Labio emphasizes, “was a memorable experience that significantly impacted my success.”
As Dr. Labio progressed through her educational journey, milestones like receiving scholarships bolstered her confidence and propelled them toward greater achievements. “I received a scholarship… It was the first scholarship I acquired for $500, but not the last,” Dr. Labio shared. “Eventually, I received a full-ride scholarship to a doctoral program with a stipend.”
Now, as a full-time faculty member at SWC, Dr. Labio is determined to pay it forward, drawing inspiration from her own experiences to empower others, particularly women and individuals seeking second chances.
“The journey from student to faculty member epitomizes the transformative power of education and the profound impact of unwavering support,” Dr. Labio affirmed. “Today, I’m a full-time faculty member, who discloses her incarcerated past openly, proud of all my failures and inspired to empower others along the way.”
As Second Chance Month is celebrated, her journey serves as a reminder of the resilience of women and the boundless possibilities that second chances afford. Her advice resonates deeply with those facing similar obstacles:
“Be yourself, ask questions, do your best, and know your limits. Be proud of your missteps and embrace the identities you hide.”
As Dr. Labio continues to inspire and uplift others at SWC, her journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of education, the resilience of the human spirit, and the importance of celebrating and supporting women’s journeys and second chances.
