Nicolette Luna, a dual enrollment student from Bonita Vista High School, has been recognized as the National College Reporter of the Year by the Associated Collegiate Press, coupled with a prestigious proclamation from the City of Chula Vista. This outstanding achievement reflects not only individual success but also the collective efforts of a supportive community.
Luna embarked on her journey in June 2020, when she decided to dual-enroll in Journalism 101 at Southwestern College (SWC) amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unbeknownst to her at the time, this decision would mark a pivotal turning point in her budding journalism career.
“Take any opportunity that comes your way, no matter how difficult it may seem,” Luna states, “it will be worth it.” Her journey, characterized by growth and learning within the journalism realm, became a testament to resilience and determination.
Luna shared, “Receiving these recognitions felt amazing. It was the build-up of all the hard work I put in and also the work of those that supported me like my family, colleagues and Dr. Branscomb.”
Expressing gratitude for the doors opened by the Journalism program and the mentorship of Professor Max Branscomb, PhD, Luna emphasized the collaborative nature of the achievement, acknowledging the support she received.
“It was intimidating being on the staff and then an editor,” Luna admitted. However, through focused dedication and the welcoming atmosphere of the staff, she overcame these hurdles.
“Nikki is a brilliant and hard-working young lady who is a gifted writer and leader. She led El Sol Magazine and The Sun with vision and energy to national championships before she was old enough to drive a car,” commended Dr. Branscomb.
Fellow SWC journalism student, Liliana Anguiano, added, “Working with Nikki has been an immense joy and pleasure. Anyone who meets her can easily recognize her tremendous talent and potential.”
Looking ahead, Luna sees this success as a catalyst for her future aspirations. The transformative impact of being part of SWC, The Sun newspaper and El Sol magazine has increased her confidence and improved her professional skills. Luna envisions continued growth within journalism and other professional realms to enhance her personal development and prepare for future schooling and careers. She aspires to graduate from high school, move to New York City, attend her dream college (Columbia University), work in the field of magazine publication or law and start her own magazine. This recognition is not just a milestone; it’s a stepping stone for Luna’s promising journey ahead.
