The Theatre Department of the School of Arts, Communication and Social Sciences proudly presents “The Addams Family,” the first musical in the brand new 500-seat state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center at Southwestern College on March 21-26.
“As the Omicron variant threatened to upend production plans of ‘The Addams Family,’ the cast demonstrated outstanding commitment as they submitted to daily testing in January during the winter intersession,” said Professor and Director Ruff Yeager. “After losing a week of rehearsal in February, they redoubled their efforts and have triumphed by creating hilarious characters and delivering delightful doses of dance and music.”
Yeager has assembled a diverse cast of 22 students eager and excited to sing, dance and act across the brand new main stage theatre. As the college retires the Mayan Hall stage, these students are ready to begin a new legacy of theatre.
“The talented and diverse cast of 22 students have united to create a fabulously funny, terrifically tuneful tour-de-force for this, the first musical theatre production in the new Performing Arts Center,” Yeager said.
To successfully produce a musical, the theatre department partners with the dance and music departments to stage a Broadway-style production. This year’s musical theatre cast is being choreographed by Dance Professor Dana Maue and vocally directed by music instructors Tracy Burklund and Ernest Quarles.
Technical Theatre Professor and Theatre Operations Manager Michael Buckley is excited to be designing and building a larger-than-life set for this musical.
“To inaugurate our brand-new Performing Arts Center, we’re pulling out all the stops,” Buckley said. “We’ve never done a set with so many intricate components and our students are getting to work with state-of-the-art tools, lighting and sound equipment. This show ushers the Southwestern College Theatre Arts Department into a whole new era.”
