In a landmark move to address the unique challenges faced by men of color in higher education, Southwestern College (SWC) has officially launched its Men of Color Success and Excellence Department. Spearheaded by Director Keith Turner, the department aims to serve 400 men of color this Fall. The program will provide comprehensive academic support, mentorship, workshops, and resources to underrepresented students, fostering a community of belonging and empowerment.
Turner, himself a first-generation college student, shared his personal journey , “I experienced many challenges while in college,” he revealed. “Navigating the campus as a first-generation student, coupled with long commutes and a demanding schedule as a student-athlete, presented formidable obstacles.”
When asked about the most critical support needed by men of color in college, Turner emphasized the importance of a sense of belonging. “Affirmation, validation, and high expectations are paramount,” he asserted. “Representation among faculty and staff is instrumental in fostering that sense of belonging and empowerment.”
Highlighting systemic issues affecting men of color in higher education, Turner stressed the need for increased representation in the classroom. “Lack of representation contributes to high dropout rates and impacts students’ sense of belonging,” he explained.
Reflecting on his own journey, Turner acknowledged the pivotal role of mentors and support programs. “Designated counselors, coaches, and programs like EOPS provided invaluable assistance,” he acknowledged.
Turner emphasized the significance of events like Black Student Success Week, inaugural Asian & Pacific Islander Graduation, inaugural Native American Pow Wow, creation of a second Puente cohort, etc., in fostering community and support networks. “These events are essential in building a sense of belonging and facilitating connections among students,” he affirmed.
Regarding the impact of diversity among college faculty and staff, Turner emphasized their role in validating students’ sense of belonging and reducing instances of microaggressions. He proposed cultural celebrations and professional development workshops for college staff to enhance understanding and inclusivity.
Offering advice to fellow men of color in college, Turner encourages seeking mentors, engaging with support programs, and building relationships with faculty members. He envisions growth and equity in programs supporting Asian, Black, Latino, Native American and Pacific Islander male student success. “Collaboration is key to enhancing these initiatives,” he concluded.
The launch of the Men of Color Success and Excellence Department marks a significant step forward in Southwestern College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. The program will build community with men of color by linking them in cohorts that take transferable courses together. The courses will be taught by trained faculty members with an embedded tutor for support. Under Turner’s leadership, the department is poised to make a profound impact on the lives of underrepresented students, breaking barriers and building pathways to success.
