The Southwestern College debate team, led by their passionate coach, Eric Maag, and guided by the wisdom of their professor, Ryan Walsh, attended the Cross Examination Debate Association National Debate Tournament at California State University, Fullerton, March 22 through the 26, and came out with some impressive wins.
The team consisting of Jacian Arreola, Benjamin Camacho, Victoria Fuentes, Melvin Hayes, Cristian Ramirez, Sebastian Robles, Alan Rothesburg, David Rivera, Ana Sanchez, and, captain, Karina Sanchez debated the topic of “The United States should restrict its nuclear forces in one or more of the following ways: 1) Adopting a nuclear no-first use policy; 2) Eliminating one or more of the legs of its nuclear triad; and 3) Disarming its nuclear forces. Their dedication was unmatched as they tirelessly prepared arguments, honed their rhetoric, and bolstered their teamwork.
Their hard work paid off as they received multiple awards. The Joy McClintock Community College Award adorned their victory, a testament to their unity and spirit. Karina Sanchez and Stefano Pagnan clinched 3rd Place in the Individual Novice Team category, showcasing their budding talent and synergy.
But it was Karina Sanchez who emerged as a beacon of excellence, earning the National New Outstanding Competitor Award. Her eloquence and intellect shone brightly, leaving an indelible mark on the debate circuit.
Behind the scenes, Eric Maag, the team’s devoted coach, was hailed as the National Public Advocate of the Year, for his contributions to labor rights, union work, and his role as lead negotiator securing full healthcare for part-time employees.
Meanwhile, Professor Ryan Walsh was honored as Critic of the Year, Pacific Region, for his highly preferred status among Pacific Region institutions and students.
As they enjoyed their achievements, the Southwestern College Debate Team stood as a testament to the power of collaboration, determination, and intellect. With their sights set on even greater heights, they embarked on their next adventure, ready to conquer new challenges and inspire future generations of debaters. Go Jaguars!
