Southwestern College is creating election districts throughout South San Diego County that will include the communities and cities of Chula Vista, Bonita, National City, San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, Coronado, Imperial Beach and other unincorporated areas.

The college’s service area is one of the most diverse populations in California and creating election districts is a way to increase representation from throughout the entire area.

“For 60 years, Southwestern College has served South San Diego County by providing transformative educational opportunities and community services,” said Governing Board President Leticia Cazares. “Creating election districts will create better representation on the Southwestern College Governing Board for our community and for our students.”

The Southwestern College Governing Board is working with Redistricting Partners, a Sacramento firm specializing in helping cities, counties and school districts redistrict their election areas based upon the latest U.S. Census data. The firm will collect community feedback and combine it with Census data to develop election area maps for review by the community and approval by the governing board in March 2022.

Community input is key to creating election districts that accurately reflect our diverse region and service area. Community members of all backgrounds are asked to fill out a quick survey to help us create new election districts. Those completing the survey will be entered into a drawing to receive one of four $50 Visa gift cards.
