The Southwestern College Governing Board will hold its first public meeting on changing governing board positions into specific districts at a virtual meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

Southwestern College trustees are currently elected at-large, meaning they are elected by voters across the entire college’s service area. The proposed change would have trustees elected by five specific districts throughout the district, which includes the communities of Chula Vista, Coronado, National City, San Ysidro, Otay Mesa and some unincorporated areas of South San Diego County.

“As a Governing Board, we are committed to increasing voter representation in elected office,” said Governing Board President Leticia Cazares. “Transitioning to a “by-trustee area” election system will make it easier for community members to run for a seat on our board and ensure that all the cities and communities in our district have a voice.”

Tuesday’s meeting will introduce the public to the overall process that will be used to draw trustee district boundaries. The consultant assisting the district in the process, Redistricting Partners, will provide preliminary census information and how it will impact the drawing of district maps.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. via Zoom. Attendees can attend through this link: https://swccd-edu.zoom.us/j/94282424970.

Additional meetings will include two public hearings and proposed map input meetings. For information and the most up-to-date information on the process, visit the Trustee Area Elections webpage.
