The Southwestern College Governing Board voted unanimously Monday to create an appointment process to replace two board members who won other county elections in November.

In a special board meeting Monday, the three board members approved the provisional appointment process allowing any registered voter in the college’s attendance area to apply. The application period is open from Jan. 5 through Feb. 1. Successful candidates will serve in either Seat No. 2 or Seat No. 5 until the next regularly scheduled election on Nov. 8, 2022.

“We are seeking two broadly diverse individuals to join us in building a welcoming, equity-focused, inclusive college community that honors our history and empowers our students, employees and district partners,” said Governing Board President Leticia Cazares.

Interested individuals can find the application and related information on the Governing Board Appointment webpage. Interested individuals must fill out the application and include a letter of interest addressed to Governing Board President Cazares. Materials are to be emailed to SWCGoverningBoard@swccd.edu and received by 4 p.m., Feb.1.

Each application and letter of interest will be considered by board members in determining who will be invited to make a brief presentation at a public board meeting on Feb. 8. The governing board will fill the vacancies no later than Feb. 16. While each governing board seat is numbered, all board members currently serve the entire district.

Interested applicants are encouraged to attend an information session on Wed. Jan. 13, at 5:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required.
