Southwestern College Again Named a ‘Best for Vets’ College

For the second consecutive year, Southwestern College has been ranked on the list of “Best for Vets” colleges by Military Times. Southwestern College is only one of 28 community colleges in the country to receive the designation.

The ranking methodology looked at school-by-school assessments of veteran and military student services, rates of academic achievement and detailed review of public data collected by federal agencies.

“Serving those who have served and their families is something that we do with sincerity on a daily basis here at Southwestern College,” said Jonathan White, coordinator of Southwestern College’s Veterans’ Resource Center. “Our students continue to inspire on a daily basis and we couldn’t be happier to receive this highly coveted award.”

Military Times evaluated Southwestern College in five categories: college culture, student support, academic policies, academic outcomes and cost and financial aid.

Southwestern College prides itself on the services and support it offers student veterans and military families. Among the support they receive at Southwestern College are financial aid, including full use of their G.I. Bill, dedicated staff and counselors, priority registration and veteran-specific scholarships.

A new and expanded Veterans’ Resource Center opened this semester thanks to a $200,000 grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. The expansion allows Southwestern College to increase its services inside the Veterans’ Resource Center, upgrade its computer lab and fund a part-time outreach position.
