Phi Theta Kappa Celebrates Birthday with Refugee Awareness Week

Southwestern College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter—Alpha Pi Epsilon— celebrated its 98th birthday all week long with Refugee Awareness Week. Throughout the week, the honor society held events and a donation drive to bring awareness to barriers that refugees face in San Diego, including the recent Haitian refugees who’ve come across from Tijuana. They filled 20 donation bins with gently used clothes, food, toiletries and more for Pastor Bill Jenkins’ church, Christ Ministry Center, who has seen thousands of Haitian refugees come through its doors.

The week culminated with a refugee awareness festival on the Mayan Hall Patio that included Pastor Jenkins as a guest speaker, free food and cake for the honor society’s birthday, cultural performances by student clubs Soulflow and Laulima Hula Hui, and poetry by Phi Theta Kappa member Kendra Guzman.
