College to Host Pair of Middle East Lectures

What

Two lectures on the Middle East – one on misconceptions, the other on Palestine – will be hosted concurrently at Southwestern College this week.

Tehseen Lazzouni, co-director of the Islamic Speakers Bureau of San Diego (ISB), will host a lecture titled “Misconceptions of Women In Islam.” Nearby, a second lecture will be held by Attorney Jean-Jacques Surbeck titled “The Israeli-Arab Conflict: Where It Stands Today.”

“Misconceptions of Women In Islam” will confront myths concerning the roles and restrictions on women within Islam.

Surbeck’s 50-minute presentation will discuss several hot topics within the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, such as:

  • Is Israel’s occupation illegal?
  • Are Israeli settlements the main obstacle to peace?
  • Do the Palestinians have a right of return?
  • Is Israel an apartheid state?
  • Do Palestinians have the right to use terrorism?
  • What is the BDS movement and what are its implications?

Lazzouni founded the ISB in 2000. Since its founding, the ISB has reached out to thousands of San Diegans in an attempt to dispel Muslim myths and stereotypes that proliferate in American culture. She has a master’s degree in business administration from San Diego State University and a bachelor’s degree in management science from the University of California, San Diego. She is currently the assistant director of UCSD’s NASA program.

Surbeck is a Swiss-American attorney who specializes in international humanitarian law. He is the Executive Director of Training and Education About the Middle East, a San Diego non-profit. For 16 years he has worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva.
